Lesson 4 - Our Sun

Our Sun

Have you ever wondered where the sun gets its light? Sometimes the sun seems so close but do you know how far the sun is from the earth? Why is the sun so important to us?

Nearly all the energy used by living things on earth comes from our sun. The sun is about 93 million miles from the earth but although it is so distant, the light of the sun only takes eight minutes to reach earth. The temperature of the sun is so high that if the sun was any closer to the earth, it would be unbearably hot and if it was any further, it would be covered with ice. Yet the energy our earth receives from the sun, is just right.

Why did God create this tremendous ball of fire and light? In the bible (Genesis 1:16), it says that ‘God made two great lights, the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night’. The greater light was the sun. Can you guess what the lesser light was? It also says that God created the plants, the waters, the fishes, birds, animals and finally, MAN. Was it not then for the good of man, beast, grass and the trees of the earth, that the sun was created?

When God put life on earth, he knew that there would be millions and millions of children like you, who would be born on the earth and be dependent upon the light, heat and power of a sun. So he placed one in space. However, just as every living thing on earth cannot live without the sun, man cannot live without God, who is our “sun and shield” (Psalm 84:11).

In John 8:12, the Lord Jesus says, “I am the Light of this world, he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life”. When we were born, we were all born in spiritual darkness. Man sinned in the garden of Eden and as a result, we have been separated from God. But God has provided us a way through the Lord Jesus Christ, who came into this world to die for our sins. John chapter 1 says about the Lord Jesus that “In him was life and the life was the light of men…..He was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”

The Lord Jesus Christ is the light in our darkened lives. We cannot enter heaven in our sin and darkness. John 1:12 says, “But as many as received Him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” If you believe in your heart, that the Lord Jesus Christ died for you on the cross at Calvary, you will come into the family of God and be “called out of spiritual darkness into his marvellous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)
