Lesson 2 - God's Promise

God's Promise

In Genesis 12, we read of a man called Abram. Abram had a special relationship with God and one day God said to Abram, “I will make of thee a great nation…….and make thy name great.….in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed” (Genesis 12:2,3). God was going to bless Abram with many, many generations. However, Abram’s wife Sarai was barren and had no child. There appeared to be no sign of the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abram. In desperation, Sarai gave Abram her Egyptian slave, Hagar, for a second wife and Hagar soon had a son called Ishmael.

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, God appeared unto him again and said, “I will make my covenant between me and thee and will multiply thee exceedingly…..neither shall thy name be any more called Abram but thy name shall be Abraham.” (Genesis 17:2,5). God changed Abram’s name to Abraham and his wife Sarai, to Sarah. The name Abraham means “Father of a multitude”. God said He will bless Sarah and give her a son for she shall be a mother of many nations. But Abraham laughed in disbelief because they were growing old. He was one hundred years old and Sarah was ninety and it was naturally impossible for them to have a child. However in Matthew 19:26, we read that, “With men it is impossible, but with God, all things are possible”. God said that Sarah will have a child and will call his name Isaac. So when Abraham was a hundred years old Isaac, his son was born.

Boys and girls, our lives are under the control of a God who is mighty and powerful. But Abraham and Sarah doubted God and what He said would happen. The Lord Jesus Christ says in John 10:10, “I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.” Do you believe that the Lord Jesus Christ came into this world to give life? He came with the purpose of saving us from our sins. It also says in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” God has promised that eternal life will be yours when you believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins and accept Him as your Lord and Saviour. If you reject God’s salvation, you are in fact doubting God’s word and laughing in disbelief, just like Abraham did. Do you believe that the Lord Jesus died for you?
