Lesson 9 - Sheltered

Sheltered

In Genesis 5:21, we read of a man called Methuselah. Methuselah had the longest lifespan in human history. He lived till the age of nine hundred and sixty nine, which is more than thirteen times the average lifespan of a man today. During those years, Methuselah had many sons and daughters. One of them was called Lamech. Lamech later had a son called Noah.

Noah’s name means “long-lived” and he certainly lived up to it because he died at the age of nine hundred and fifty. Noah lived in a day when man ignored God and often displeased God. It says in Genesis 6:5 that, “God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” The world was turning further and further away from God. However there was one exception. Genesis 6:8,9 says that, “Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations and Noah walked with God.” Noah was a man close to God. God wanted to destroy the earth because it was corrupt and filled with violence but He was going to spare Noah and his family.

So God told Noah to make an ark. He gave Noah exact instructions on how to build the ark and asked him to take the male and female of every living creature, into the ark with him. God was going to cause it to rain forty days and forty nights on the earth and every living thing that was outside the ark would be destroyed. So Noah obeyed God and went into the ark with his wife, his sons and their wives and the male and female of every animal on the earth. After seven days, the rain came down upon the earth for forty days and forty nights but Noah and his family were saved from the floods.

Do you know that God is going to judge this world again just like He did in Noah’s day? You may ask why? God is going to judge this world because “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Just like the people in Noah’s day, we have also disobeyed God and deserve to be punished. However God has again provided shelter for man to escape that coming judgement. God provided an ark for Noah and his family and all who took shelter in the ark, were safe.

God has now provided His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ as the only way of escape because the Lord Jesus Christ was sent into this world to die on the cross of Calvary for our sins. The blood of the Lord Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin (1 John 1:7). God can now look on the work of the Lord Jesus on the cross and save us from the judgement that is to come. However, Noah and his family had to enter the ark to escape the floods. You have to believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins and accept Him as your own personal Saviour, in order for you to escape the judgement that will be coming upon this world.
