Lesson 5 - First Child

First Child

Do you know how many thousands of babies are born everyday, in every country all around the world? These babies then grow to be children like yourself and then years later, to be adults like your mum and dad. Have you ever realized that many, many years ago, your parents were also children just like you are today?

Since the beginning of time, there have been billions and billions of children born into this world but do you know who was the first child to be born? In the lessons from past weeks, we learnt about the first man and woman created on this earth. We learnt of their names and how they were created. Then we learnt about the first sin that was committed and punishment, as a result of it. This couple, Adam and Eve later had a child and they became the first parents. The child was a boy and his name was Cain. Cain was the first baby to be born into this world and he later had a brother called Abel.

When Cain was born, he was “born in sin”. What does this mean? This means that Cain was already a sinner when he was born. You might remember that his parents sinned when they disobeyed against God in the Garden of Eden. This sinful nature was then passed down to Cain, when he was born. Boys and girls, do you know that when you were born, you were born in sin just like Cain and Abel? We all have that same sinful nature in us.

This sinful nature was soon displayed when Cain killed his brother Abel out of jealousy. Abel sacrificed an animal as an offering to God but in contrast, Cain brought to God, the fruits of the ground which he had worked on, with his hands. He thought that the work of his own hands were good enough for God. Abel however, recognized his weakness and brought to God the firstling of his flock. God respected Abel’s offering but not Cains’. So Cain became jealous and killed his brother, Abel.

The Bible says that, “All our righteousness are as filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). This means that all the good that we can ever do, will never be good enough for God, because of our sin. So like Abel, we have to recognize that God will not accept the works of our own efforts. Furthermore, God has already provided a sacrifice for us, through His only begotten Son. In John 3:16 it says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Only the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ is good enough for God and sufficient to take away our sins. All you have to do now is to believe that He died for you on the cross at Calvary and everlasting life will be yours.
